The 3D effect, which is highly compelling when you see the videos played back on a Vision Pro, is created by shooting video on two of the iPhone’s cameras at the same time, the Main and Ultra Wide lenses. Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide Marketing, Greg Joswiak, describes these videos as “magical.” Although Apple, like most companies, can tend towards hyperbole, I’d say there is something really extraordinary about these videos, which I saw in a demonstration of the Vision Pro some months ago. In a Newsroom post, Apple specifies how the two latest Pro handsets are now capable of recording spatial videos, describing it as “a groundbreaking new capability that helps users capture life’s precious moments” and watch them back on the Apple Vision Pro when it’s released next year. Dodo Peak is well-trodden territory, and anyone who’s ever played Q*bert, or Frogger, or Crossy Road or anything like that will know the script here. If you’re looking for a brand new experience that will change the gaming landscape you might want to look as far away as you can. Nothing I’ve told you here will have you peeling your face off and screaming that you never knew such originality was possible. It feels like the sort of thing that would have been ripe for microtransactions had this been a standard free-to-play mobile game instead of an Apple Arcade one, but instead here you just unlock them through good old-fashioned hard work like back in the day. Some of them aren’t even dodos, which feels like sacrilege but there you go. Collecting them will increase your overall coin tally which can then be spent on different dodo outfits, which in turn affect the speed your dodo runs at. You get one star for simply beating the level, but the others are given for a variety of tasks which are different in each stage: it could be clearing it within a set time, collecting an optional red gem along the way, wiping out all the enemies on a stage, or what have you.Īlong the way you’ll find coins lying around. If it wasn’t clear that this was originally a mobile game, the fact that each stage scores you out of three stars should make it obvious. ![]() Crabs follow your own movements, monkeys always move in your direction, you know the drill. Each world has its own different environment – beach, snow, the usual sort of thing – as well as its own enemies, which have their own movement patterns. There are 60 stages in total, split into six worlds. The watermelon makes your dodo move extremely quickly, which is useful when you’re trying to beat the level within a certain time (more on that in a bit), while the sort of radish-looking thing makes you invincible for a brief period, letting you kill enemies and stride through obstacles unharmed. There are also a couple of power-ups you can collect to make things a bit easier. Sometimes it’s worth making your way through the harder bits first and saving the easier section until later when it’s easier to get past with a long ‘tail’. What seems like the most obvious path through a stage may be deceiving, because the last part could be trickier to navigate when you’ve got a bunch of babies behind you. As the stages get more complex and the number of eggs increases you’ll welcome this, because it means you get the freedom to experiment with different routes through each stage. Thankfully, there aren’t any lives in this game, you get as many tries as you like. You can’t drop some off and come back for the rest: you have to collect them all in one run, meaning by the time you’re heading to the exit you’ve got a big long string of babies behind you that you have to guide away from danger. This gets even trickier in later stages where you’re gathering four, five or maybe even more eggs. You might be able to slip past an enemy, but if a baby behind you hits the enemy instead that still counts: you’ll need to start the stage again. That’s hardly a groundbreaking gameplay mechanic, of course, but there’s a twist.Įach time you hatch an egg and start trailing a baby behind you, the baby will also be vulnerable. Obviously it’s not as easy as that: each stage is also inhabited by a variety of enemies, and one touch will put your dodo on its arse. The world is made up of cubes, and you play as a dodo who can hop from cube to cube.Įach stage has a set number of baby dodo eggs dotted around, and your aim is to head out, find each egg (at which point it’ll hatch) then escort the babies back to the starting point where they’ll be safe. The general concept feels like what you’d get if you took the arcade classic Q*bert and based it on rescue missions instead. It’s a good job it did, too, because while it’s a fairly basic game in the grand scheme of things it’s also an entertaining one that’ll keep you busy for a while. It’s finally broken free of its iOS shackles, though, and arrived on the Switch eShop this week. All of the details - from the outfits to the hotel setting to the secret meetings to thwarted attempts to “rebel” to the intense setting of the Security Council to the checked-out teacher chaperone who desperately wants to be cool - indicate that this was absolutely written by someone with an intimate knowledge of Model U.N., and the authenticity makes it all the funnier. story line that gets correct one of the dorkiest high-school activities there is. Things don’t get any better once the ball is in play. Velocity can be similarly tweaked by holding a button down while in the wind-up. Pitch type can be rendered meaningless, however, with liberal use of the pitch “aftertouch” feature. ![]() A rough direction is provided by pressing the D-pad. You select one of four pitches in the available arsenal, then choose whether you want to throw in the strike zone or outside. Breaking balls look the same as fastballs. There doesn’t appear to be much variance between pitches, either. At two dozen games into our Triple Play 2001 experience we’re still going down on called strikes that look six inches off the ground and outside. This makes them unpredictable and very tough to figure out, but also reinforces the idea that this game is a long way from what anyone would describe as “baseball.” It’s also very difficult to determine where the strike zone is. Working the count and trying to fool batters with speed and pitch type changes is all but impossible.Ĭomputer-controlled pitchers simply ignore all conventions. The count seems virtually meaningless, whether you’re on the mound or facing a computer hurler. Each pitch comes in all on its own, with no relationship to what was thrown before or what will be thrown afterward. At bats just aren’t the complete, almost organic units that any student of the real game knows that they should be. Where the designers really drop the ball is with the most important part of the game: the pitcher-batter duel. This is a computer game for people who want to hate baseball. A game that doesn’t bother to get pitcher-batter mechanics correct. Once more we get a game that is baseball in name alone. ![]() This doesn’t need to be bad, but the designers failed in this regard entirely, and in the end made Triple Play 2001 an almost unplayable game. "Wiseguy" didn't just help pioneer serialized TV storytelling, it also uses it for a real emotional and narrative purpose. It's the kind of series that produces devoted, evangelistic fans: Den of Geek writer Kirsten Howard coined the term "The Lost Roomening" to describe a process where she "gently forced one friend after another to make time for the show." Watch it, and you may find yourself doing the exact same thing. It's a lot to take in, but the show paces its revelations well, slowly building up this world and its rules, and it delivers a genuine hit of the kind of dread and wonder we want from sci-fi and fantasy shows. ![]() How do you respond to this kind of phenomenon? Over the years, the handful of people aware of The Room's existence have cataloged its mysteries without understanding them - and the schisms between these people are deep and can turn violent. It now exists in a realm of its own, and all the items that were in it have developed unique, powerful, and even dangerous properties. The titular Room was once an ordinary room in a roadside motel, but after a strange occurrence in 1961 that is known only as The Event, it disappeared from reality. After all, who isn't afraid of Daylight Savings Time? Plus, if you haven't watched the show since you were a kid, you might be surprised by how well some of the horror holds up to adult viewing: As Collider's review explains, the show eschews a lot of the obvious monsters and instead "pokes fun at the cult-like aspects of multi-level marketing, unethical advertisement, and even the arbitrariness of daylight savings time," concerns that only amplify as you get older. With five episodes directed by horror-comedy master Joe Dante himself, it's unsurprising that the series gives you both laughs and genuine scares. "Eerie, Indiana" is a nostalgic treat - a kind of "Stranger Things" precursor with some kid's show wackiness added in for extra flavor. or at least get the rest of the town to admit that something is going on here.
